Psychoeducational Assessments

Psychoeducational Assessments are a useful tool in assessing an individual's capabilities and establishing an educational, training or rehabilitation program. The Assessment process is designed to meet the unique needs of the child, youth or adult. The process is also designed to answer specific questions. A variety of different psychometric assessment tools, in combination with an interview process, is used to assess skills, intelligence, personality, motivation, and performance.

In some cases the assessment process may be relatively straightforward. In other cases, such as the assessments of disabilities or brain injury, the assessment process may be more complex. The first step is establishing the purpose of the assessment in consultation with the Client and the referral body.

Children and Youth

A Psychoeducational Assessment may be valuable for children and youth in the following situations:

  • learning disabilities
  • giftedness
  • assessment of academic performance
  • underachievement
  • difficulty in reading and writing
  • physical disabilities
  • behavioural difficulties in school
  • developmental delay
  • perceptual motor difficulties
  • academic planning and programming
  • special program and tutoring design
  • attention deficit disorder
  • post secondary academic planning
  • vocational planning

Adults

A Psychoeducational Assessment may be valuable for adults in:
  • post secondary education planning
  • determining the appropriate academic program reentry level
  • career planning
  • disability assessment
  • accident insurance claims for retraining
  • assessment following an acquired brain injury

Assessment Report

The assessment report describes the Client's areas of strength and weakness and includes detailed recommendations for future actions designed to best meet the needs of the Client.

Who conducts the Psychoeducational Assessment?

The Assessment is conducted by a Psychometrist or Psychological Associate under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist. In some cases and for certain purposes the Assessment may be conducted by the Psychologist themselves. In all cases the Assessment report is signed by both the Psychometrist or Psychological Associate and the Registered Psychologist.

How Long Will the Assessment Take?

Generally this depends on the purpose of the Assessment process and the level of detail required. The Assessment process is conducted in stages with each stage adding to the complete picture of the individual.

Most Assessments can be completed in just a few weeks. However, Assessments of disability or brain injury, particularly those for legal or insurance purposes, are more complex and often need to be conducted over a longer period of time.

Psychoeducational Services

The Assessment process includes an interpretation of the results and recommendations to the Client and family. However, it is often useful if the results and recommendations are also presented to the people who will have the responsibility for the implementation of the recommendations. This may be a school, teacher, training program, agency, institution, insurance company or therapist.

A Psychoeducational Assessment is often used as an information and advocacy tool to ensure that the Client receives the best program and services to meet their unique needs. However, at times it is difficult to arrange for the best services.

The clinician who conducted the assessment can be a very effective advocate if the Client has difficulty obtaining the program or services that they need.

In addition, the Assessor can assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of a program based on the Assessment results. In this way the program can be regularly modified or adapted based on the actual performance of the Client.

Other Services

Psychoeducational Assessments and Services may be combined with other Assessment or therapeutic services if required. The need for additional services may be determined at the beginning of the Assessment process or can be addressed at a later time based on the results.

Quinte Counselling Services provides a range of clinical and consulting services and also maintains referral relationships with a wide variety of other service agencies.
